Sun exposure is a primary factor contributing to skin ageing, which is why sunscreen products are essential to protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays.
Sunlight consists of different radiations, with different wavelengths. Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is the most harmful to the skin.
Long-wavelength UVA rays account for approximately 95 per cent of the UV radiation and can penetrate through light clouds. These rays provide a surface tan that tends to fade easily. UVA rays penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, affecting its collagen and elastic fibres, which is why they are considered a leading cause of photo-ageing.
On the other hand, shorter-wavelength UVB rays tend to penetrate the skin’s outer layer, stimulating melanin production. They promote a longer-lasting tan, but because they are more powerful they can cause sunstroke, rashes and burns without proper protection. Although they do not reach the dermis – the skin’s deeper layer – even UVB contributes to skin ageing.
This is why solar cosmetics must ensure good protection from both UVA and UVB.
